To Kill A Mockingbird

To Kill A Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee published in 1960. The book has been well-known for decades as an American classic, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and having over 18 million copies sold and translated into ten languages. The book covers a lot of timely, controversial topics including racism and forced gender roles.

The book takes place in the 1930s, following a girl named Scout and her brother Jem as they navigate through childhood in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. This southern town, although bleak and somewhat forgettable, has many secrets and a complex story to go along with it. The book also introduces people who live in the town as the story goes on.

The 8th graders at 276 were reading this book for their English Language Arts class and this is what some of them has to say about the book:

Jesse Ding, 8th grade

I would rate it 4 stars because it was a little tiring to read. However, it was a very nice roller coaster of a ride. I would describe it as

a warm blanket, because it is not very exhilarating but still cozy to read.

Ethan Joseph, 8th grade

I would rate it 5 stars because of the interesting plot in the middle. I was also very interested to learn about the characters in the beginning of the book.

Maren Aydogan, 7th grade ELA Teacher

Harper Lee creates memorable characters and highlights important conflicts in this classic book.

Arshmeet Sodhi, 8th grade

I would rate it 1 star because the book does not deserve to be iconic and should not have a place in this society.
